Building an Eco-Friendly Custom Wine Cellar Using Reclaimed Wine Barrels
At Custom Wine Cellars Florida, we want to build wine cellars designed to enhance the beauty of our clients’ homes. We find ways to add stylish features and ensure that the wine storage solution is perfect for every project.
We work with top-notch builders in the construction industry. One of them is Wine Cellar Specialists. This team of builders has proven its expertise, knowledge, and passion for creating unique residential wine cellars using innovative wine storage solutions.
Wine Cellar Specialists use an eco-friendly approach to wine cellar construction to help reduce waste materials in the environment. Moreover, using sustainable materials will also add an old-world touch to your wine room.
The homeowners in Naples, Florida, wanted to transform the space next to their wine tasting area into a fully functional wine storage room. They sought the help of Wine Cellar Specialists for this project. With proper planning and utilization of sustainable materials, the wine room looks elegant, with a storage capacity of 1,580 standard bottles. The old-world look was achieved using reclaimed wine barrels and stone.
Using Reclaimed Wine Barrels to Create Unique Wine Cellar Features
When designing custom wine cellars, one of the crucial factors to consider is creating an eye-catching wine display while caring for the environment. In this project, Wine Cellar Specialists used reclaimed wine barrels to make this home wine cellar stand out and reduce waste materials.
Until now, oak wine barrels are used in wineries to ferment and age the wine. It is an essential process because the porous nature of oak allows the barrels to impart desirable qualities to the wine through a low level of oxygen exposure and evaporation.
It has significant effects on the color, texture, tannin, and flavor of the wine stored in them. It also causes interaction between the Phenols within the wood, producing giving the wine some hints of vanilla.
After the oak barrels have served their purpose (about 5-7 years), they are usually thrown into the landfills or sold as firewood. To help reduce waste, Wine Cellar Specialists have been using them in wine cellars. In this wine room construction project, they used reclaimed wine barrels for the wine racks, countertop, and flooring.
Wine Barrel Racks
The wine racks in this home wine cellar in Naples, Florida, are made from Wine Cellar Specialists’ Vintique wine barrels, which are very stylish. They have a curvy appearance because of the convex shape of the wine barrels.
The wine barrel racks are designed to retain the aroma of the barrels. They exhibit the natural colors of the different parts of the barrels. Wine Cellar Specialists installed the racking on all the walls of the wine room. All of the wine racks are designed with a cork-forward orientation.
Upon entering the home wine cellar to the right of the entryway, you will see the wine racks consisting of display rows that pitch the bottles at an angle and a few X-ins at the bottom. The racking on the rest of the walls consists of curved-style wine barrel racks.
The only difference is that Wine Cellar Specialists added an arched display with a tabletop at the center of the back wall. The tabletop provides additional storage space for a few bottles and a place for serving wines. More X-bins were added below the tabletop.
Wine Barrel Flooring and Countertop
Another unique feature of this home wine cellar in Florida is the wine barrel flooring. It is called Stave flooring because the wine barrel strips used were from the outer parts of the oak wine barrels. You can see the markings caused by the metal bands and hoops of the used wine barrels.
The wood planks are not curved because they were engineered to create impressive flooring. Since no two plans are the same, any wine barrel flooring is one-of-a-kind. For the Cooperage countertop, Wine Cellar Specialists constructed it from the top and bottom of the wine barrels, showing Cooper’s stamps and patinas.
Other Features of the Custom Wine Cellar in Florida
Wine Cellar Specialists always make sure that every component is made of high-quality materials and can add character to the wine room. In this project, they installed stonework on the walls of the wine cellar, which look perfect with the wine barrel racks and flooring.
Every wine cellar should have an efficient wine cellar cooling system installed. Wine Cellar Specialists utilized the 6000S wine refrigeration unit from CellarPro. The evaporator was placed above the large glass window, while the condenser was installed outdoors. These two components are connected by a line set consisting of copper tubing and electrical wiring. With a remote control unit and display panel installed outside the wine room, regulating and monitoring the temperature is easier.
