Elegant Home Wine Cellar Designed and Installed by Miami Master Builders
Whether you are a homeowner who wants a traditional or modern wine cellar that will display and store your collection, finding a knowledgeable builder is necessary. Coastal Custom Wine Cellars has extensive experience in the wine cellar construction industry. Their team’s passion and creativity allow them to create elegant and functional wine storage spaces for their client’s collection.
In 2015, they completed a wine cellar conversion project in Anaheim Hills, California, designed with stylish and functional features.
They also made sure that the room could provide a perfect environment for the proper aging of wine by sealing the wine cellar and installing a reliable refrigeration system.
How a Florida Expert Transformed a Playroom into a Fabulous Custom Wine Cellar
The first meeting with the client happened on June 10, 2015. The project started the following month. The owner had a large kid’s playroom in their basement where they wanted to display their prized wine collection.
They wanted their wine cellar to have a contemporary feel. Since the space was large, they requested Coastal Custom Wine Cellars to add a tasting and a cigar humidor cabinet.
Stellar Custom Wine Rack Design that Gave Life to the Basement Playroom
The style of your racking system plays a significant role in the overall appeal of your wine cellar display. At Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, they offer customization options to allow design inputs from their customers, resulting in a unique and stellar wine room.
After determining all the requirements of their clients, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars will then create 3-dimensional drawings to allow for better visualization of their Miami home wine cellar.
See below the 3D images for this wine room conversion project.
As you can see in the drawings, various bottle orientations were combined to add character to the wine room. Since the client wanted a modern home wine cellar, wood and metal wine racks were used.
The wood used was Alder, which is one of the favorite materials used in wine cellar construction. It exhibits reddish and brown hues. This wood variety is popularly known as the “chameleon” because it can mimic some of the hardwoods when applied with a stain. It also has beautiful knots and burls.
In this case, the wooden wine racks were stained with Sherwin Williams Rustic color. For the metal wine racks, a Brushed Nickel stain was applied to lend a contemporary appeal.
Custom Wine Rack Features on the Left Wall
The left wall, as you enter the doorway, consists of a quarter-round display wooden wine rack. This storage unit has five levels that provide space for displaying a few bottles and accessories, such as decanters, bar tools, and wine glasses.
It is followed by a wide-open area with a tabletop where the owner can place the bottles that are soon to be opened. It is also a great area for decanting wine. One metal wine rack was installed in the open area of this wall.
Below the tabletop are diamond bins, which are ideal for storing wines in bulk. It allows for better organization of the bottles according to type and variety. Even large-format bottles can be stored in the diamond bins.
Functional Racking Style at the Back Wall
The custom wine racks at the back wall were also constructed from wood and are 27-inches deep. The left and right sides of the wall consist of single-deep individual bottle storage at the top section. A display row with lighting lines the entire wall.
At the top center, you will see another open area with a tabletop. The main purpose of this is to hide the evaporator that was used to cool the playroom. Coastal Custom Wine Cellars added a stemware rack that stores the glasses upside down.
Below the tabletop are a 2-door double-deep cigar humidor cabinet designed to store the client’s cigarettes and cigars. The left side of the humidor has five shelves. The bottom shelf is intended for storing cigars individually. To provide a good view of the cigars and cigar boxes, the shelves were tilted slightly.
At the right side of the humidor is a regular cabinet that provides additional space for the owner’s decanters, stemware, bottle openers, and other wine cellar accessories.
Wine cellars need to have a temperature between 55-65 degrees Fahrenheit to help wine mature properly. However, the humidor cabinet had to be more than 58 degrees Fahrenheit, so Coastal Custom Wine Cellars installed weather stripping on all sides of the door to achieve a warmer environment. Additionally, they line the humidor cabinet with Spanish Cedar, a type of wood that has the ability to maintain a higher temperature and humidity level.
The rest of the bottom section is double-deep individual wine racks. A double deep rack stores the bottles in a slot, one in front of the other. This is one of the ways to maximize the storage capacity of a wine room.
There are two case storage bins incorporated on each side of the bottom racking. Each storage bin can store two cases because it is a double-deep wine rack. There is a single vertical column wine rack installed at both ends of the back wall. The larger openings can accommodate standard and large format bottles.
Metal Wine Racks from VintageView – a Modern Storage Solution for Miami Home Wine Cellars
Metal wine storage systems are in demand in building contemporary home wine cellars in Miami. In this wine room conversion project, the client wanted to build a modern wine display that utilizes both wood and metal.
Coastal Custom Wine Cellars installed the VintageView metal wine racks just in front of the glass wall, which adds character to the custom wine room. Another metal racking was placed in an open area of the left wall and on the right wall.
VintageView has been known for manufacturing wine storage systems with a special focus on form and function. Their wine display solutions are stylish and practical. Their metal wine display systems are also flexible. It’s not difficult to find a location of the storage unit and it can blend well will any décor.
The metal storage racks store the bottles horizontally with labels facing out. This type of racking allows for easy browsing of a specific type of wine. You don’t need to flip the bottle to see the label. Flipping can disturb the wine’s sediments, and may cause off-flavors.
The total capacity of the floor-to-ceiling metal wine racks installed on the three walls is 852 bottles. A Brushed Nickel finish was applied on the metal racks to add luster.
Seamless Glass Wall and Door – Adding Elegance to the Wine Storage Room
There’s nothing better than having a good view of your collection from outside your cellar. In this basement conversion project, seamless glass walls and doors were used to achieve this. Glass panels are also recommended by Miami master builders in creating contemporary home wine cellars.
The frameless tempered glass panels had to be installed very carefully to ensure that an airtight seal was created in the wine room. Additionally, the wine cellar door was equipped with weather stripping and an automatic door bottom to prevent the warm air from entering and the cool air from escaping the cellar.
Air leakage can alter the chemical properties of the wine, affecting its flavor and aroma. Temperature fluctuations and variable humidity levels may also cause the breakdown of the cooling unit and higher energy bills.
Achieving a Climate-Controlled Storage Environment
In every project that they do, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars see to it that their client’s precious collection is stored in a safe environment. In order to preserve the bouquet of the wine, they insulate the room and install the most suitable wine refrigeration unit.
Insulation
In building climate-controlled wine cellars, insulating the walls and ceiling must be completed before the framing of the room.
This is very important because it helps prevent extreme changes in the temperature and humidity levels, which usually happens during summer and winter.
Too much heat can affect the cork and cause wine oxidation. High humidity levels can cause moisture build-up, which triggers the growth of molds and mildew in the cork, wine labels, racking, walls, and ceiling. Mold growth can affect the quality of the wines and structural integrity of you wine cellar.
Wine Cooling Unit
Coastal Custom Wine Cellars used an 8000S ducted split wine cooling system from CellarPro. The evaporator was mounted on the wall and incorporated within the racking in the back wall. The unit was hidden in a lattice wooden grill cover. The condenser was installed outside of the house with exterior housing to protect it from weather conditions.
