Limited space should not stop you from investing in your dream residential wine cellar. In Miami, Florida, a homeowner was very happy with their completed wine room under the staircase. Find out how Blue Grouse Wine Cellars helped them build out the tiny and odd-shaped room.
Even a Small Room Can Be a Stunning and Safe Wine Cellar
Investing in a climate-controlled wine cellar is important in preserving the quality of your prized wines. Poor storage conditions will deteriorate wine easily, resulting in a waste of investment.
When planning to build your wine cellar at home, there are many considerations to take. The first thing that you should do is determine the space where you want to build your wine room.
Keep in mind that you do not need a large room to have safe and beautiful storage space for your wine collection. Next is to find a reliable designer and installer to do the job for you.
Wine Cellar Installation Project Under the Stairs
In Miami, Florida, a wine enthusiast decided to make use of their tiny space under the staircase. They sought the help of Blue Grouse Wine Cellars, one of our top-notch wine cellar dealers. Requirements and Stellar Design for the Wine Room
At Blue Grouse Wine Cellars, their goal is to create functional, attractive, and safe storage spaces because they want their clients to enjoy collecting and drinking wine for many years to come. After the assessment of the owner’s aesthetic, technical, and financial requirements, 3-dimensional drawings were created.
The room, which is located in the main living area, has a sloping ceiling. It is 12.5 feet in length and 4 feet in height. The client requested Blue Grouse Wine Cellars to enclose the entire space and use wood for the wine racks. They also provided the most suitable cooling system and lighting for the wine cellar.
Despite the space constraints and irregular shape of the room, the result was amazing!
Preparing the Room for Wine Cellar Construction
The walls, door, floor, and ceiling must be well insulated. Room insulation is a vital aspect of building a wine cellar. Without it, your wine room will not be able to provide the optimum temperature needed by wine for proper maturation, especially during the winter and summer months.
Unstable temperatures can cause an unpleasant taste and smell in the wine. This is because poor insulation will interfere with the cooling of the wine room and alter the wine’s chemical properties.
Additionally, your wine refrigeration system will be forced to work harder than normal, resulting in higher electric bills. Another negative effect of a poorly insulated wine room is the breakdown of your cooling unit.
On this custom wine cellar project completed by Blue Grouse Wine Cellars in Miami, the existing walls under and at the back of the room had to be demolished. This was to allow the insulation and vapor barrier to be added. After the demolition, they installed a new type of drywall intended for wine cellars.
Stylish Wine Rack System Designed by a Custom Wine Cellar Master Builder
The process of choosing the style and material of your wine racks can be difficult. However, with the help of an expert, you can be confident that your wine rack system can store and display your wines with visual appeal.
In this project, Blue Grouse Wine Cellars combined various racking styles to create an attractive custom wine display. The entire racking was installed at the back wall. With a height of approximately 6 feet, the wine racks can accommodate nearly close to 360 bottles.
Combining Bottle Orientations
Individual bottle openings for 750ml bottles and a few sections for magnum storage can be found at the top section of the racking. The middle section is a high reveal display row for individual bottles (3 sections) and magnum bottles (1 section).
The display row stores the bottles at an angle to ensure that the cork is in contact with the wine. This will help the cork retain its elasticity and sealing ability. The cork will become brittle and will shrink when it dries out, which can result in wine oxidation.
Blue Grouse Wine Cellars added diamond bins in the lower section to maximize the storage capacity of the tiny room. This type of wine rack is also recommended for collectors who buy wines in bulk. It allows for easy organization of the wine bottles. If the owner wants to store wooden cases, the divider in each diamond bin can be removed.
Wood Material for the Wine Racks
One of the factors that affect the overall appeal of a cellar is the type of material used for the wine racks. Wood has been a popular choice because of its many benefits.
Wooden wine racks offer warmth and an earthly appeal. Their timeless beauty makes them suitable for both traditional and modern living spaces. They can also be customized according to your specific needs.
Blue Grouse Wine Cellars used Knotty Alder for this custom wine cellar in Miami. This variety of wood has tight knots, straight grain patterns, and an even texture. The wine racks were applied with an Early American stain for a more polished look.
Sophisticated Wall and Door
One of the ways that will maintain a stable environment in a climate-controlled wine cellar is by making sure that the door and walls are constructed properly. They must be sealed and well-insulated.
In this wine cellar construction project, the owner wanted a glass wall and door for his climate-controlled wine cellar. Blue Grouse Wine Cellars constructed the wall and the entryway from laminated glass panels to prevent UV rays from harming the wines.
Proper insulation and sealing components were also installed on the door. This process prevents external factors from causing temperature fluctuations in the wine room.
