Successful Custom Wine Cellar Extension Project
Proper wine storage is the main reason why many homeowners invest time and money in building a wine cellar. Keeping wine in a stable environment will preserve wine’s complex characteristics, maximizing wine tasting enjoyment.
The style and material of racking are also important, to achieve the visual appeal that the wine collector desires. The wine racks must also be designed to allow for easy access and storage of wines, and for maximum storage.
Recently, Vintage Cellars completed a second wine room installation project in Miami, Florida. Their creative and experienced team made sure that everything was installed properly to ensure that their client’s collection was displayed safely and impressively.
Innovative Wine Storage Solution for a Modern Home
Vintage Wine Cellars had to work on this project twice. The first installation was completed in 2008, where the wine cellar could accommodate 1,100 bottles.
The owners love to buy wines in bulk and store the bottles anywhere in the racking. After about 5 years, they decided to contact Vintage Cellars and made a request for an extension of their existing wine room.
The original wine cellar was installed during the construction of the home. The architect, contractor, and designer of the home provided Vintage Cellars with a palette so that the wine racks would match the existing cabinetry.
Wood and glass were all over the residential space. The goals of Vintage Cellars were to match all of the existing woodwork, double the size of the wine room, and add wine racks with universal bottle openings.
Wine Rack Material
One of the ways to have a visually appealing wine cellar is to match the existing theme of your home. Since the cabinetry and furniture in the client’s home were made from Sapele Mahogany, Vintage Cellars used the same material.
Custom wine racks made from this type of wood have a medium to dark reddish color. They exhibit attractive wavy patterns or molted designs.
They also do not have a distinctive odor, which met one of the requirements of the owner to have scent-free wine racks.
Compared to African Mahogany or Red Oak, Sapele Mahogany is harder and more stable.
Combined Bottle Orientations to Achieve a Unique Wine Cellar in a Miami Home
The visual appeal of your wine room is determined by the styles of racking incorporated into the design. The 3-dimensional drawings were created after Vintage Cellars made a careful assessment of the client’s needs. The images showed the different elevations of the walls, dimensions of the room, and the bottle capacity of the racking.
Elevation 1
Elevation 1 shows the wine racks installed on the right wall as you enter the home custom wine cellar. The top section has an area with a VC-style cover, which hides the wine cooling system evaporator. On both sides and below it are single bottle wine racks.
The middle section had diamond bins, which were intended for storing wines in bulk. During the second installation, Vintage Cellars opened up a couple of spaces below the diamond bins to provide a storage area for the owner’s large-format bottles. The coved trays, which can store bottles as big as 9 liters, were designed with two cascading heights. This type of bottle orientation showed the label of each bottle, allowing for easy browsing.
This area was illuminated with an LED lighting system, which was installed above the coved trays. Although this type of lighting is a bit more costly than regular bulbs, it can save you money in the long run because it consumes less energy and has a longer lifespan.
LED lights are also known to be safe because of their low heat emission, protecting the wine from being damaged.
Elevation 2
When you go to the next area in this home wine cellar in Miami, you will pass by a set of wine racks on the left side of the wall.
Vintage Cellars installed three columns of horizontal display racks, which are 4 ¾ inches deep, with fixed coved trays and solid sides. They can store about 36 standard bottles and 117 magnums.
The middle section of this wall, which is 8 ¼ inches deep, was intended for displaying the client’s beautiful decanter and mini car collections on adjustable glass shelves.
Mirror and lighting were added at the back of this racking to add drama to the wine storage area.
Elevation 3
In this elevation, the existing wine rack consists of 3 sections with coved trays and solid backs, 358 single storage slots, and 18-bottle racking with scalloped neck supports.
Vintage Cellars installed an additional three sections of custom cabinets with scalloped neck supports and two columns of individual wine racks. Now, this racking can display 34 bottles in the custom cabinets and 384 750ml bottles in single bottle openings.
To help the racking bear the weight of the bottles and cabinetry, large steel supports were installed under the double-deep tabletop. The extra space below it provided space for the wine boxes.
Elevations 4 and 5
A total of 98 magnum bottles can be stored in Elevation 4. At the top section is another VC-style cover that hides the wine cooling evaporator.
In Elevation 5, Vintage Cellars also added new sections. After the second installation, this wall can accommodate 26 bottles in the custom cabinets, 16 bottles in the coved trays, and 288 bottles in the individual wine racks.
Library Rolling Ladder
With a ceiling height of about 10 feet, a rolling ladder was needed. This would allow the owner to easily access the bottles stored in hard-to-reach areas of the wine racks. A hook ladder was used for this project. It can be moved from one wall of the room to another through a rail attached to the wine rack.
